Recently I’ve been having a most wonderful time with a lot of “aha-moments” reading a book called Science in a Free Society by Paul Feyerabend. In it, the case is made that what is generally called “science” is just one world view among many, without any inherent superiority over other systems of knowledge, and therefore it should not hold such a dictatorial position in society as it does. Though I’ve never felt able to put it into words as brilliantly as Feyerabend does, this insight has always lived within me and I have used it throughout my life so far to survive and thrive under a series of extremely difficult circumstances.

In fact, applying it consistently to every problem on my path is the source of the unique wealth of experience and problem-solving skills that it is my business to offer. There is one passage in the book that applies specifically to my line of work. It captures the essence of the Alexandria Enterprises mission with such accuracy that I feel compelled to share it here.

Here again (the awareness of) global relations that linked man to nature have been destroyed with disastrous effects. Man once possessed complex knowledge concerning his place in nature and was to that extent secure and free. The knowledge has been replaced by abstract theories he does not understand and must take on trust from experts. But should humans not be able to understand the basic constituents of their lives? Should not every group, every tradition be able to influence, revere, preserve such constituents in accordance with its wishes? Is not the present separation of experts and sheep one reason for the much deplored social and psychological imbalance? And is it therefore not important to revive a philosophy that draws a clear distinction between a natural knowledge that is accessible to all and guides them in their relations to nature and their fellow men and the intellectual tumours, also called “knowledge” that have assembled around it and have almost made it disappear?
